3 Seconds to Kung Fu

The Internet, advertising and our culture demand our attention to be split into three second decisions. The only thing that can be responsibly decided in three seconds, is to ascertain if you are physically safe or not. As a mammal, this is a natural and instinctual thing for us to understand in that three second timeframe.

The pressure of so many tiny clips presented to us so quickly throughout our day has created new neural pathways in our brains. We are living in the new world of the movie The Matrix. Remember the scene where Tank is bringing up Ju Jitsu for Neo to learn? We are there. But though we have developed these pathways in our brains that tell us that this is possible, we have not come to a point where the belief that we can do these things is there. It is the next neuro pathway that will be formed. In the meantime, we must choose and focus. When we want to learn something, we need to write it down and stick it on the wall above our computer screen so we remember, as we will be tempted to be sucked into some other bit of information or of social media.

Without focus nothing gets accomplished and we continue our lives the same as they were before. Though this feels next to impossible in our culture, it’s not. This is where a meditation practice comes into great importance. Daily meditation helps us to become more mindful in all that we do. It anchors us into our bodies and what we are actually doing at the moment, instead of constantly being swept away by the millions of things we are presented with every second. Beginning your day without your phone but with meditation instead is a game changer for your focus level and your peace of mind.
