When unexpected things happen that stop us from doing what we so desperately want to do, just hold on a minute! Don’t let yourself get so upset. Step back from it and see that it’s a gift from the universe. It’s not a curse from the universe! Especially when we are the type that never give ourselves a break. Driving our bodies, our brains and our hearts into the ground, we think we will get our goal accomplished faster that way. This is not the case. Instead, we lose focus, think irrationally, speak too quickly and carelessly and generally stop caring about our affect on those around us. Becoming too obsessed with a goal makes everything else get out of proportion. It’s not that being focused on a goal and continuing it with great persistence is a negative thing, in fact it’s the only way that it will be accomplished. But there is a type of delusion that comes over a person that is too focused on reaching the finish line as quickly as possible. This delusion does not help the situation move forward at all. In fact, it slows it down radically. Our true way forward is through how we relate to others. As trauma recoverers, it is a especially important to focus on our words and actions toward others, because this is where we have the greatest difficulty, this is our biggest Blindspot. If we keep on driving ourselves into the ground, not only will our goals be put on delay, but our body, brain, heart and relationships will react unfavorably. So if we are pushing ourselves in this way, remember when the delay comes, to have gratitude for it, relax into it, self introspect and use the time to change our way of thinking and learn an approach that is kinder to ourselves and others.
